The iPad, another game changing device from Apple

I've been waiting a long time for this item, glad to see the tech is finally up to Apples standards to make it at a low price. I'll be getting one when I return to Canada, even if I have to cross the border to pick one up although they should be in Canada by June.

Some people found its features underwhelming but thats because Apple is waiting to show off iPhone OS 4.0 w/ background apps and I am sure other amazing features some for iPod Touch and iPhone and I am sure a few cool ones just for the iPad.

This will be a game changer like the iPhone was, this is a low price but vastly better than a netbook and in my opinion better than a laptop experience.

I asked on the OE forums to Paul if in light of the iPad announcement are there plans to take advantage of the larger screen, more power or other features of the iPad?

Someone mentioned on one of the forums sites a good suggestion for utilizing the iPad for OE. It was to allow for Mobile Safari to run the browser version of OE. I am not sure if theres a way to tell the distinction between the iPad and the iPhone/iPod Touch but considering its meant to play a different role than Apples smaller devices, I am guessing there will be. Although I am not a web developer so I am unaware of how much work would be behind it.

Right now the iPad could run the OE App either in a iPhone resolution in the center of the screen or stretched to fit. While not pretty at the moment it does the trick.

Also, I know making an entirely iPad optimized app is a long way off as there a lot of crashing fixes to be focused on first for the much larger user base. OE is a business and needs to put its larger user base first in order to keep bringing in subscriptions.

But from what I have been reading Apple has made it easy in the new SDK for devs to add support to their apps for the iPads resolution, this could be a relatively quick addition at some point.

Of course its quite a ways off but the already mentioned hyrbid interface of the browser and the current app would be an awesome user experience.

While bringing this up even before the launch may be getting ahead of ourselves, especially considering I am not going to be doing any of the dev work, but the iPad resolution update and later an iPad specific interface could be inapp purchases. Personally I don't see while players wouldn't be willing to pay a few dollars to get these updates, think of them as an OE bake sale.

iPad looks pretty cool. It's more of a gaming device than a bigger version of iPhone without the phone? I'm capped and the iPad page won't load lol.

Pre-ordered a 3G iPad 32GB for the wife. I will get some hands on and choose between a new iPhone or an iPad for myself later this summer.

I got to try out an iPad at an Apple Store recently.

My impressions are that for all the hype, Apple is clearly holding features back for verson 2, and for now it's basically a very large, very well-executed touchscreen. I tried out Warpgate, Plants vs. Zombies, and Labyrinth 2 on the iPad, as well as playing around with the iBooks app. It's great, but I'm surprised by how little desire to have one I feel for it now that I can actually try it out.

I'm waiting for next year.

I am sure next years model will be much better, as it always is with any first gen tech (especially in a new product category).

I am betting that the front facing video cam will be on the next version along with the mobile Light Peak connecter and of course more ram, a better processor (this is Apples first in house processor after all), etc.

But I do not think any of those are worth waiting a year for the hope of. I travel all the time and my Macbook isn't as well suited for portability.

For anyone whos curious about the durability of the iPhone I have used it in all sorts of climates that tend to wreck electronics (high humidity, extreme cold, sandy, etc), it has been dropped about 20 times on hard surfaces and it spent 3 mins under water last December while turned on when it slipped out of my jacket and into a slush puddle in a parking lot. The entire iPhone is still fully functional.

Anyone else planning on getting an iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone this year?

I wish I could get an iPhone, but since I'd be waiting anyway for the next gen iPad... save my money lol
